It’s not easy being an actor, now even more, with actors expected to look no less than Greek Gods with sculpted bodies and six-pack abs in place.
While one may expect that having a good body is sufficient preparation for a film, the roles that fetch the stars accolades are actually ones that are close to real life, requiring every kind of emotional and physical investment — sometimes even going out of shape.
Actors have now realised that physical appearance is paramount to a film’s success and are going all out to sculpt their body according to the role.
Acquiring role-specific physiques is not an easy task and actors like Suriya, who settle for nothing but the best, are always willing to go the extra mile. Suriya will essay the role of a Buddhist monk and a circus artiste in his upcoming release 7 Aum Arivu and has left no stone unturned to do justice to his role, physically.
Alkhas Joseph, the man behind Suriya’s varying physique in the film, says, “Right from diet to the workout and flexibility, we worked on every aspect. The role of the Buddhist monk traverses many centuries. As the older Buddhist monk, Suriya was required to have a paunch for which he put on 5-6 kilos. A few scenes later, we see him flaunting a six pack.”
Alkhas travelled the world with Suriya in order to train him in the right context. “We went to Vietnam for 8-10 days, where he learnt martial arts and worked on his flexibility. He also spent 10-15 days with a circus troupe to learn juggling. This required a lot of practice and focus. I was with him throughout and trust me it was tasking. Suriya spent hours working on his fitness and honing his skills.”
